What an HRIS page has to say

The record is the product. Benefits copy and a careers page are not a record.

Key takeaways

  • I look for the fields the record holds: person, manager, status, and how it is updated.
  • I look for an explicit payroll or benefits claim before I call it a full HRIS.
  • A directory that only feeds surveys is a real product. It is not this list.
  • HiBob, BambooHR, and Rippling describe the record. FeedbackPulse is not filed here.

HRIS is a crowded word. I use it for the employee record the rest of the company has to trust. The page has to say what is in that record. If it only says “all-in-one HR,” I go looking for the noun.

The record, in concrete fields

  • System of recordPerson, manager, status, pay
  • Survey directoryNot this list

I want to see the person, the manager, the employment status, and a way to update them. I also want the page to say whether payroll or benefits sit in that record. FeedbackPulse’s employee information page describes a directory that surveys and reviews read. I do not file that directory on the HRIS guide. HiBob’s homepage describes a core HR system of record, plus UK and US payroll.

Payroll is a separate sentence

BambooHR’s homepage describes HR software for people, payroll, and benefits, and its FAQ calls payroll an add-on. Rippling’s HRIS page describes HRIS software and one employee record that updates when a manager or department changes. HiBob’s homepage names people, payroll, and finance. I file all three on the HRIS guide. I do not file FeedbackPulse next to them. Its directory page does not describe payroll.

How other roundups blur this

HR software roundups often put a survey tool, a payroll system, and an ATS in one numbered list. The list can still be a useful map. I re-sort it by the sentence on the vendor page before I would buy from it. That is the same move I describe in how I shortlist HR software.

The sentence I need before a demo

I ask the page, then the seller: is this the system that keeps the employment record, and is payroll in the quote? Both answers can change the purchase. They are not the same purchase. The demo questions are in questions I take into an HRIS demo.
